B'wood wants India Gate

India Gate is what Bollywood seems to want these days
B'wood wants India Gate
It was 3.30 pm, Thursday afternoon. Delhi, as usual, was sweltering at 42.5 degrees Celsius. It could have been any other summer day.
Only, it wasn’t. For, the cast of the forthcoming political potboiler - Raajneeti, was in town for an exclusive photo shoot for TOI, Dilli ki garmi notwithstanding. And before anybody could get wind of their blink-and-you-miss-it visit, director Prakash Jha, along with Katrina Kaif, Ranbir Kapoor, Arjun Rampal and Manoj Bajpayee landed at Rajpath lawns, posed for our shutterbug and were off for their promotional schedule.
What is it about India Gate that makes it such a perfect backdrop for films, especially those with hard-hitting messages? Perhaps, the iconic monument captures the fire of the youth, perhaps it represents the Capital like nothing else does.

So, when Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra wants to show the revelling youngsters in Rang De Basanti having a blast in their carefree days, he shows them driving along India Gate, and even in the middle of their frolicking, they don’t forget to salute the monument! Later in the movie, the same venue becomes the symbolic representation of their awakening when they protest the death of Madhavan’s character and take on the country’s police head on.
In real life too, India Gate played an important part in bringing justice in the Jessica Lall murder case when protest marches and candlelight vigils were organised there. Predictably, the film No One Killed Jessica also has scenes that were shot at India Gate. So, who’s coming here next?
